On December 15th, 2023, 2D-MATURE PhD students from the University of Duisburg-Essen visited the labs of principal investigator Andrei Vescan, PhD student Yingfang Ding and associated researcher Amir Ghiami at RWTH Aachen University.
The Compound Semiconductor Technology (CST) works in the field of deposition and characterization of 3D and 2D compound semiconductors, hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductor materials as well as electronic and optoelectronic devices. One material class under investigation is 2D semiconductors, especially TMDC (transition metal dichalcogenides) with their extraordinary optical and electrical properties.
Visitors had the chance to get more insights on their research and about the excellent equipment that is available for their research, especially the material deposition equipment such as the MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition) tool, the PECVD (plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition) tool as well as the showerhead OVPD (organic vapor phase deposition).
Topics discussed reached from device processing techniques such as UV lithography, spin coating and developing, over E-beam and thermal evaporation, ICP RIE (Inductively Coupled Plasma Reactive-ion Etching), lift-off to the characterization methods like SEM (scanning electron microscopy), AFM (atomic force microscopy), Photoluminescence laboratory as well as electrical performance measurement devices.
After these inspiring insights and discussions our PhD students ended their visit at the beautiful Christmas market in Aachen’s city centre.
